Youth Involvement in Climate Change Discussion and Decision Making Processes

Climate crisis is a youth rights crisis. It is a direct threat to a child’s ability to survive, grow and thrive. Children and young people are the least responsible for climate change yet will bear the greatest burden of its impacts. Key to addressing these threats is building the climate resilience of and access to safe water and sanitation, universal healthcare and quality education.

A momentous occasion unfolded at Kadika Girls High School in Suna Central Ward, Suna East Constituency, as Mama Agnes Ochilo led a tree planting exercise and was unveiled as the school’s patron. This event not only marked a significant step in environmental conservation but also underscored the importance of education and youth empowerment.

In her role as the newly appointed patron of Kadika Girls High School, Mama Agnes Ochilo took the lead in a tree planting initiative that carries far-reaching implications. The primary objective of this exercise was to instill a sense of environmental responsibility and conservation in the students, who are the future stewards of our planet.

Together with the students, Mama Agnes Ochilo and the school community planted a diverse array of tree species around the school compound. These trees will serve a dual purpose, enhancing the aesthetics of the school environment while also providing crucial ecological benefits. Among these benefits are carbon sequestration, temperature regulation, and soil erosion control, all contributing to a healthier and more sustainable ecosystem.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the event was the unwavering enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by the students. It was evident that they not only grasped the significance of environmental conservation but were also eager to take an active role in preserving our natural heritage. Their involvement is a testament to the power of education in fostering responsible citizenship and ecological awareness.
